Specific ASO recipes for specific situations — conversion drops 20%, a competitor enters, ratings fall below 4.0. Tactical responses that work.

ASO advice is often abstract. "Polish your listing." "Improve your screenshots." Useful, but rarely actionable in the specific moment.

This is the cookbook. For specific common problems, the specific tactical response.

Recipe 1: conversion rate dropped 20% suddenly

Symptoms

  • Last 2 weeks conversion noticeably lower than previous.
  • Other metrics stable.
  • No obvious explanation.

Recipe

  1. Check App Store Connect / Play Console for traffic source changes. Did paid acquisition spike (which dilutes conversion) or did organic shift?
  2. Check recent app updates. Did you ship something that changed the listing or in-app experience?
  3. Check recent reviews. Did 1-star spike?
  4. Check competitor. Did a competitor refresh their listing recently?
  5. Run free ASO audit. Compare to last audit.

If you find the cause, fix it. If not, the metric usually recovers in 2-4 weeks.

Symptoms

  • Competitor in App Store Today tab.
  • Your installs not directly affected yet.

Recipe

  1. Don't panic. Featured competitors get a temporary spike; sustained ranking is up to product quality.
  2. Run Competitor Tracker to monitor their changes.
  3. Study what they did. What story did they pitch? What features?
  4. Pitch yourself. Your differentiator + recent updates → editorial.
  5. Strengthen your listing. Featured competitor is a forcing function to polish.
  6. Monitor over 30 days. Sometimes their feature drives users to your category, which lifts everyone.

Recipe 3: rating dropped below 4.0

Symptoms

  • Average rating now 3.8-3.9 (or lower).
  • Recent reviews trending negative.

Recipe

  1. Read recent 1-star reviews carefully. Pattern?
  2. Categorize complaints: bug, feature, monetization, support.
  3. Fix highest-impact category first.
  4. Respond to every 1-star within 24 hours with timeline.
  5. Push for fresh reviews from satisfied users (in-app prompt at positive moments).
  6. If catastrophic (3.5 or lower), consider rating reset in App Store Connect (nuclear option, do once per year max).
  7. Monitor weekly. Expect 2-3 months to recover.

Recipe 4: launched and got zero installs week 1

Symptoms

  • Launch day = 10 installs.
  • Week 1 = 30 total.

Recipe

  1. Check listing visibility. Is your app appearing in search? (Search your title.)
  2. Run free ASO audit. Score?
  3. Check paid acquisition setup. Are campaigns active? Right targeting?
  4. Push press / community. Reddit, Hacker News, Product Hunt, your network.
  5. Email subscribers if you have any.
  6. Be patient. App Store algorithms take 1-2 weeks to learn.
  7. Iterate listing after week 2 based on data.

Recipe 5: top keyword rank dropped 10+ positions

Symptoms

  • You were ranking #5 for your top keyword. Now you're #15+.

Recipe

  1. Check competitor. Did a new entrant move into top spots?
  2. Check your conversion. Algorithms demote apps with lower conversion.
  3. Check your install velocity. Was it slowing?
  4. Run Keyword Density Checker. Did your density change recently?
  5. Polish your listing. Sometimes ranking drops correlate with stale listing.
  6. Wait 2-4 weeks. Some drops are temporary.

Recipe 6: paid acquisition CPI doubled overnight

Symptoms

  • Apple Search Ads CPI from $3 to $6 in a week.
  • Same campaigns; same targets.

Recipe

  1. Check competition in your category. Did new bidders enter?
  2. Check ad creative. Has it gone stale? Refresh.
  3. Check targeting. Did your conversion rate from these keywords drop?
  4. Adjust bids. Don't bid blind; calculate max bid based on LTV.
  5. Test new campaigns / variants. Sometimes spend shifts within your account.
  6. Accept short-term loss. Bidding wars die down; wait it out.

Recipe 7: D7 retention drops 5%

Symptoms

  • D7 retention was 35%. Now 30%.
  • Other metrics stable.

Recipe

  1. Check onboarding. Did anything change?
  2. Check crash rate for recent installers.
  3. Talk to lapsed users (interview them).
  4. Check competitor. Did they ship something that's drawing your users?
  5. Identify the leak: which step in the funnel?
  6. Fix the leak. Sometimes a small bug; sometimes a positioning shift.

Recipe 8: subscription cancellation rate spiked

Symptoms

  • Monthly subscription churn was 8%. Now 12%.

Recipe

  1. Check recent product changes. Did you ship something users disliked?
  2. Check pricing changes.
  3. Check competitor pricing.
  4. Read cancellation reasons (if you collect them).
  5. Email lapsed users asking why.
  6. Fix root cause. Improve product, restore feature, adjust pricing.
  7. Win-back campaign to recover some.

Recipe 9: feature you launched got no usage

Symptoms

  • Shipped feature 3 months ago.
  • Usage <5% of MAU.

Recipe

  1. Check feature discoverability. Do users know it exists?
  2. Check feature value. Did you build what users wanted?
  3. Talk to users. "Did you notice the new feature? Why didn't you use it?"
  4. Decide: improve the feature, surface it better, or remove.
  5. Sunset if needed. Removing failed features is OK.

Recipe 10: localized listing isn't converting

Symptoms

  • You localized to Japan / Germany / Brazil.
  • Conversion rate is 50%+ lower than US.

Recipe

  1. Check translation quality. Hired native speaker or used Google Translate?
  2. Check cultural fit. Are screenshots culturally relevant?
  3. Check audience fit. Is your product genuinely needed in this market?
  4. Check pricing. Often PPP-adjusted pricing helps.
  5. Hire native ASO consultant for the market.
  6. Consider sunset. Some markets aren't economical despite localization.

Recipe 11: App Store rejection mid-release

Symptoms

  • Submitted update; rejected.
  • Live app is fine but stale.

Recipe

  1. Read rejection carefully. Note guideline cited.
  2. Reply within 4 hours via Resolution Center with fix or argument.
  3. If still rejected, request a call with App Review.
  4. Don't make multiple submissions in same review cycle.
  5. Document the rejection for future reference.

See App Store rejection recovery guide.

Recipe 12: ad campaign suddenly stopped working

Symptoms

  • Meta / Apple Search Ads campaign was driving installs.
  • This week: same spend, half the installs.

Recipe

  1. Check creative fatigue. How long has same creative run? Refresh.
  2. Check targeting. Did audience saturate?
  3. Check competitor. Did they enter your bid space?
  4. Check landing / listing. Did anything change?
  5. Refresh creative. New ad variants.
  6. Test new audiences.
  7. Sometimes channels fade. Diversify.

Recipe 13: viral negative attention (Twitter / Reddit)

Symptoms

  • Your app gets criticized in a viral thread.
  • Reviews spike negatively.

Recipe

  1. Don't argue publicly. Especially in heat.
  2. Acknowledge the criticism if valid.
  3. Engage 1-on-1 with the original poster respectfully.
  4. Fix the underlying issue if it's real.
  5. Communicate the fix publicly when shipped.
  6. Monitor for 30 days. Negative attention usually fades.

See emergency response playbook.

Recipe 14: you're getting reviewed harshly during a sale

Symptoms

  • Running a sale; users complaining about previous full-price.

Recipe

  1. Address it head-on. "Yes, those who bought recently can email for partial credit."
  2. Don't pretend it didn't happen.
  3. Time future sales more carefully.

Recipe 15: you can't decide what to work on next

Symptoms

  • Mid-quarter; multiple priorities competing.

Recipe

  1. Run free ASO audit to find biggest listing gap.
  2. Pull cohort data to find biggest retention leak.
  3. Look at LTV/CAC by channel to find best growth opportunity.
  4. Talk to 3 users to understand what they need.
  5. Pick the option with highest leverage × lowest cost.

When stuck, the highest-impact action is usually the most obvious one you've been delaying.

Recipe 16: app is profitable but not growing

Symptoms

  • $5k MRR; stable for 4 months.
  • Sustainable but stuck.

Recipe

  1. Try a major listing refresh (see stale listing symptoms).
  2. Localize 1 new market.
  3. Test new pricing tier.
  4. Start content marketing if not.
  5. Talk to 10 users for product directions.
  6. Pitch press with milestone story.
  7. Sometimes plateaus break with patient iteration.

Symptoms

  • App Store Today / Google Play featuring goes live.
  • Install spike.

Recipe

  1. Don't change anything. Lock the build.
  2. Monitor crashes / performance. Higher traffic = more bugs surface.
  3. Capitalize: increase paid acquisition while organic is elevated.
  4. Push for reviews from new users.
  5. Pitch follow-up press.
  6. Plan post-feature sustainability. Some apps spike then return to baseline; capture momentum.
