The Indie Mobile Developer Toolkit (2026)

The tools indie iOS and Android developers actually use in 2026 — IDE to subscription management to ASO — with pricing and selection criteria.

The indie mobile dev toolkit in 2026 is unrecognizable from 2020. Subscription tools, AI-powered code assistants, no-code paywall builders — the landscape has changed enormously.

This is the working stack for indie devs in 2026, with pricing and selection criteria.

Development environment

iOS

  • Xcode — Apple's IDE. Required. Free.
  • Cursor / GitHub Copilot — AI coding assistant. $10-$20/month. Massive productivity gain.
  • Bartender / Hot — workspace management.
  • Reveal / Hierarchy Inspector — UI debugging.

Android

  • Android Studio — Google's IDE. Required. Free.
  • GitHub Copilot / Cursor — same AI assistant.
  • Scrcpy — screen mirroring + control.

Cross-platform

  • Flutter / React Native / KMP — pick your framework if going cross-platform.
  • Expo for React Native.

Source control

  • GitHub — standard. Free for indie.
  • GitLab / Bitbucket — alternatives.

Backend

Backend-as-a-Service

  • Firebase — Google's BaaS. Free tier robust; pay as you scale.
  • Supabase — open-source Firebase alternative. Free tier generous.
  • AWS Amplify — Amazon's BaaS. More complex but powerful.
  • Apple's CloudKit — iOS-only, free. Limited but built-in.

Database

  • Firebase Firestore / Realtime DB — bundled with Firebase.
  • Supabase Postgres — full SQL.
  • CloudKit — Apple's solution.

Auth

  • Firebase Auth — covers most cases.
  • Supabase Auth — alternative.
  • Sign in with Apple — required for any social-sign-in app on iOS.
  • Sign in with Google — for Android.

Subscription management

Three players dominate (see RevenueCat vs Adapty vs Apphud):

  • RevenueCat — most mature, biggest community.
  • Adapty — best paywall A/B testing.
  • Apphud — cheapest at scale.

All have free tiers up to ~$10k MTR.

Analytics

Four major options (see analytics tools comparison):

  • Mixpanel — easiest to start with.
  • Amplitude — best cohort analysis.
  • PostHog — open-source, all-in-one.
  • Firebase Analytics — free, integrated.

Crash reporting

  • Firebase Crashlytics — free, integrated.
  • Sentry — better grouping; $5/mo+ at modest scale.

See mobile app crash rate monitoring.

Push notifications

  • OneSignal — UI-friendly. Free up to 30k users.
  • Firebase Cloud Messaging — always free; lower-level.

See OneSignal vs Firebase Cloud Messaging.

In-app messaging / paywalls

  • RevenueCat Paywalls / Adapty Paywall Builder — no-code paywall editing.
  • Custom-built — for full control.

Attribution

For most indie apps (<$5k/month paid spend): SKAN + per-network dashboards. No MMP needed.

At scale: see MMP comparison.

ASO

  • ASOhack — free audit + 8 tools.
  • App Store Connect — your own data.
  • Apple Search Ads dashboard — keyword popularity scores.

Skip paid ASO tools unless you really need historical keyword tracking. See best free ASO tools.

Deep linking

  • Self-implement Universal Links + App Links — free.
  • Branch.io — free tier, robust attribution.

See deep linking guide.

Feature flags / remote config

  • Firebase Remote Config — free, integrated.
  • Statsig — free tier generous, better UI.
  • PostHog — open-source, integrated with analytics.

See feature flagging guide.

Customer support

For indie scale:

  • Plain email (yourdomain.com/support).
  • Help Scout at modest scale ($25+/mo).
  • In-app feedback form for direct contact.

See customer support strategy.

A/B testing

For ASO:

  • App Store Connect Product Page Optimization — built-in, free.
  • Google Play Store Listing Experiments — built-in, free.

For in-app:

  • Firebase A/B Testing — free with Firebase.
  • Statsig — free tier.
  • RevenueCat Experiments — paywall A/B testing.

Design / Prototyping

  • Figma — industry standard. Free tier.
  • Sketch — Mac-only alternative.
  • Penpot — open-source alternative.

For icon design:

  • Figma + plugins — most common.
  • Bezel.it / Sketch for mockups.

Asset generation

  • AI Image Tools (Midjourney, Stable Diffusion, DALL-E) for visual assets.
  • Canva for quick graphics.
  • Lottiefiles for animations.

App Store assets

  • App Store Connect — submission.
  • AppMockUp / Smartmockups — device mockups for screenshots.
  • ASOhack Screenshot Lab — AI feedback on screenshot quality.

Marketing automation

For email:

  • Postmark / SendGrid — transactional email.
  • ConvertKit / Mailchimp — newsletters.
  • Customer.io — lifecycle (more complex; B2B).

Project management

  • Linear — preferred for indie dev workflows.
  • Notion — flexible, all-in-one.
  • Trello / Asana — simpler kanban.

Hosting (for marketing site / API)

  • Vercel / Netlify — static + serverless. Free tiers.
  • Fly.io / Railway — full-stack hosting.
  • Cloudflare Pages / Workers — Edge hosting.

Estimated monthly cost for indie dev

A working stack at modest scale (1k DAU):

  • Xcode / Android Studio: $0
  • GitHub: $0 (free tier)
  • Firebase: $0-$25
  • RevenueCat: $0 (free tier)
  • Mixpanel: $0 (free tier)
  • Crashlytics: $0 (Firebase)
  • OneSignal: $0 (free tier)
  • ASOhack: $0 (or $18.99 Pro)
  • Domain + Vercel: $15-$30
  • Cursor / Copilot: $10-$20
  • Figma: $0 (free tier)

Total: $25-$75/month at modest indie scale.

At 10k+ DAU, the stack scales to $200-$1k/month. Manageable, profitable.

What's not on the list

  • MMPs (Adjust, AppsFlyer, Singular) — only when paid spend >$5k/month.
  • Enterprise analytics (Mixpanel paid, Amplitude paid) — until you exceed free tier.
  • Paid ASO tools (AppTweak, Mobile Action) — when you need historical keyword tracking.
  • Customer service tools at indie scale — plain email works.
  • Feature-flag enterprise tools (LaunchDarkly) — Firebase Remote Config is fine.

When to upgrade

Each tool has a "graduate" trigger:

  • Mixpanel free → paid: cross 1M events/month.
  • RevenueCat free → paid: cross $10k MTR.
  • No MMP → MMP: cross $5k/month paid spend.
  • Email → Help Scout: cross 10 support emails/day.
  • PostHog free cloud → self-host: cross 1M events/month, want full control.

Upgrade incrementally, not all at once.

The principle: free first, paid when justified

Most indie devs over-spend on tools before they validate the product. The right pattern:

  1. Free tier of everything.
  2. Validate product-market fit.
  3. Add paid tools where they unblock specific work.
  4. Optimize spend annually.
