Unity Ads Guide for Mobile Game Developers (2025)

How to set up and optimize Unity Ads for rewarded video. Placement strategy, eCPM benchmarks, and monetization tips for indie mobile game developers.

Unity Ads is one of the largest ad networks built specifically for mobile games, reaching a massive pool of highly engaged gamers across thousands of titles built on (and beyond) the Unity engine. For indie game developers, it's often both a monetization channel and a user-acquisition channel — the same network can show ads inside your game and buy you install traffic from other games.

This guide covers how to use Unity Ads effectively for both sides of that equation.

Unity Ads: Monetization vs. User Acquisition

Unity Ads serves two distinct purposes, and it's worth being clear on which one you're solving for:

  • Monetization — showing rewarded video, interstitial, and banner ads inside your game to earn revenue
  • User Acquisition (Unity Ads / ironSource / LevelPlay) — buying app install traffic from Unity's gaming-focused inventory

Most indie developers start with monetization, then layer on UA once they understand their unit economics.

Ad Formats for Monetization

FormatUser experienceTypical eCPM impact
Rewarded VideoOpt-in, user gets an in-game rewardHighest eCPM, best retention impact
InterstitialFull-screen, shown between levels/sessionsMedium eCPM, can hurt retention if overused
BannerPersistent small adLow eCPM, minimal disruption

Recommendation: Lead with rewarded video — it's the only format that reliably increases both revenue and retention, since players opt in for a clear benefit (extra lives, currency, continues).

Setting Up Monetization

Step 1: Integrate the SDK

  • Add the Unity Ads SDK (or Unity LevelPlay for mediation across multiple networks)
  • Configure ad units for each format you plan to use (rewarded, interstitial, banner)
  • Test in Unity's sandbox/test mode before going live to confirm placements fire correctly

Step 2: Design Rewarded Placements Around Real Value

The best-performing rewarded placements give players something they actually want at a moment they actually want it:

  • Extra life after a failed attempt
  • Double currency/rewards after level completion
  • Continue-run offers instead of a hard game-over
  • Unlock a cosmetic or power-up

Avoid forcing rewarded ads as the only way to progress — that frustrates players and increases churn.

Step 3: Layer In Interstitials Carefully

Interstitials monetize well but are the most likely format to hurt retention if overused. A common, safer pattern:

  • Show no more than one interstitial per 2-3 minutes of active play
  • Never show one on the very first session
  • Avoid interruptions mid-action (e.g. mid-level) — place them at natural break points

Step 4: Set Up Mediation

Very few developers should run Unity Ads exclusively. Use Unity LevelPlay (or another mediation layer) to auction each impression across multiple networks and take the highest bid — this alone typically lifts eCPM 15-30% over a single-network setup.

User Acquisition with Unity Ads

If you're also buying installs through Unity's UA product:

Monthly BudgetStrategy
$200 – $500Single campaign, broad targeting, 3-5 video creatives
$500 – $2,000Split by platform (iOS/Android), optimize toward D1/D7 retention events
$2,000+Multiple creative concepts tested against retention and IAP/ad-revenue value

Unity's UA inventory skews heavily toward gaming apps, which means your competition is other games — creative that clearly communicates core gameplay in the first few seconds performs best.

Optimization Tips

1. Optimize for eCPM, Not Just Fill Rate

A high fill rate with low eCPM often means worse overall revenue than a lower fill rate at a much higher eCPM. Watch total revenue and eCPM together, not fill rate in isolation.

2. A/B Test Placement Frequency

Small changes in how often you show interstitials can swing both revenue and D1 retention meaningfully. Test frequency changes in a proper A/B test rather than gut-feel adjustments.

3. Segment by Player Value

Players who are likely to spend on IAP shouldn't see the same ad density as free/low-value players — many mediation setups let you reduce ad frequency for high-LTV segments to protect their experience.

4. Track Ad Revenue Per DAU, Not Just eCPM

eCPM alone doesn't capture impression volume changes. Ad Revenue Per Daily Active User (ARPDAU from ads) is the metric that actually reflects monetization health over time.

5. Refresh UA Creative Regularly

Like most gaming-focused ad networks, Unity UA creative fatigues fast — plan for new creative concepts every 2-3 weeks, not months.

Benchmarks for Indie Game Developers

MetricGoodAveragePoor
Rewarded video eCPM (Tier 1)>$15$8-$15<$8
Interstitial eCPM (Tier 1)>$8$4-$8<$4
Rewarded ad opt-in rate>25%15-25%<15%
UA CPI (casual/hyper-casual)<$0.50$0.50-$1.00>$1.00

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Running Unity Ads exclusively without mediation — leaves eCPM on the table
  2. Over-showing interstitials early in the funnel — tanks D1 retention before players are hooked
  3. Making rewarded ads mandatory for core progress — frustrates players and increases uninstalls
  4. Ignoring eCPM by segment — treating every player the same wastes both ad revenue and IAP potential
  5. Not testing ad frequency — guessing at placement cadence instead of A/B testing it
  6. Letting UA creative run for months unchanged — performance decays as gaming-focused inventory fatigues fast

Revenue Calculation

If your game averages 10,000 DAU, a 30% rewarded ad opt-in rate, and a $12 eCPM:

  • Daily rewarded impressions = 10,000 × 0.30 = 3,000
  • Daily rewarded revenue = 3,000 ÷ 1,000 × $12 = $36/day

Add interstitials (e.g. 1.5 impressions/DAU at $6 eCPM):

  • Daily interstitial revenue = 10,000 × 1.5 ÷ 1,000 × $6 = $90/day

Combined, that's roughly $126/day in ad revenue at 10,000 DAU — useful as a baseline before layering in mediation gains or IAP.

Getting Started Checklist

  1. Integrate the Unity Ads SDK (or Unity LevelPlay for mediation)
  2. Design rewarded placements around real, opt-in player value
  3. Cap interstitial frequency and avoid showing one in the first session
  4. Set up mediation to auction impressions across multiple networks
  5. Track eCPM and ARPDAU together, not fill rate alone
  6. A/B test ad frequency changes before rolling them out fully
  7. Segment ad density by player value where your mediation tools allow it
  8. If running UA, start with broad targeting and gameplay-forward creative
  9. Refresh UA creative every 2-3 weeks
  10. Review revenue and retention together — never optimize one in isolation

Unity Ads works best when monetization and player experience are treated as the same problem, not competing priorities — the games that grow fastest are usually the ones that get rewarded ads right first.
