ASO for Fintech Apps: Compliance & Keywords (2026)

Fintech ASO has its own rules — financial claim policies, compliance keywords, and trust signals. The full playbook for indie fintech developers.

Fintech is one of the most ASO-difficult categories on mobile. You're competing with giants (Robinhood, Revolut, Cash App) for category attention, store reviewers are paranoid about financial claims, and a single misworded screenshot caption can get you rejected.

This is the working ASO playbook for indie fintech.

What makes fintech ASO different

1. Compliance, not just keywords

Apple and Google enforce stricter content rules in finance. Common rejection reasons:

  • Claims about returns ("earn 8% APY") without backing.
  • "Bank" in your title or marketing copy if you're not actually a bank.
  • Unsubstantiated comparisons ("better than [competitor]").
  • Promises of guaranteed gains, "no risk", or "passive income."

If your category is investing/crypto/lending, every word on your listing is reviewed. Hedge everything: "potential", "may", "subject to market conditions", "not financial advice."

2. Category competition is brutal

Top-10 categories by ad spend in 2026 — finance is consistently #1 or #2. CPI in finance averages $5-$15 in US, vs $1-$3 for utilities. Your organic ASO leverage matters more here than almost any other category.

3. Trust signals dominate conversion

Fintech installers care about trust before features. Conversion rate is highly sensitive to:

  • Star rating (>4.5 is table-stakes, <4.0 is unrecoverable in this category)
  • Review volume (looks abandoned with <500 reviews)
  • Visible compliance signals (FDIC insured, SIPC, regulated by X)
  • Recognizable brand partnerships

A 4.7-star fintech app with 50,000 reviews will outconvert a 4.6 with 500 reviews by 2-3×. Volume matters more here than elsewhere.

Keyword strategy for fintech

Primary keyword categories

1. Function keywords — "budget tracker", "expense splitter"
2. Asset keywords — "stocks", "crypto", "ETF", "bonds"
3. Outcome keywords — "save money", "invest", "build credit"
4. Compliance keywords — "FDIC", "SIPC", "regulated" (only if true)
5. Brand-adjacent — "alternative to [bank]" (careful with rejection)

What to avoid

  • Bank names you're not affiliated with. "Better than Chase" gets rejected.
  • "FREE" in title — both stores penalize this in finance category.
  • Crypto-specific words if you also want App Store features. Apple has historically de-featured aggressive crypto branding.

Workflow

  1. Pull the top 20 ranking apps in your subcategory.
  2. Run each through Keyword Density Checker.
  3. Spot the must-have keywords (appear in every top app).
  4. Note the differentiator keywords (appear in some, not others — your positioning).
  5. Cross-check Apple Search Ads popularity scores.

Subcategory selection

Apple finance subcategories:

  • Finance (catch-all)
  • Lifestyle > Personal Finance (sometimes lower competition)

Google Play finance:

  • Finance (main)
  • some apps fit Business (B2B fintech) or Productivity (expense tracking)

Pick the least-competitive subcategory you legitimately fit. Test the fit by running Competitor Tracker — if your top-5 competitors are all $1B+ companies, you'll never rank organically there.

Title and subtitle

The formula that works:

Title: [App Name]: [Function] · [Asset/Outcome]
Subtitle: [Trust signal] · [Differentiator]

Examples:

  • "MintWise: Budget · Save Money" / "FDIC Insured · No Hidden Fees"
  • "StockSage: Investing · Stocks" / "SEC Registered · Commission Free"

Compliance signals in the subtitle increase conversion and pass review.

Screenshots: trust first, features second

Standard utility-app screenshot order is "feature, feature, feature."

Fintech needs a trust-first order:

1. Hook + trust badge (FDIC, SOC 2, "1M+ users", "Bank-grade security")
2. Core feature (the thing they install for)
3. Secondary feature
4. Social proof (testimonials, review excerpts)
5. CTA / outcome ("Start saving in 60 seconds")

If you have any compliance / certification badge that's true, get it on screenshot 1. Conversion lifts 20-40% on average.

Run your screenshots through Screenshot Lab to confirm trust elements are readable at thumbnail size.

Reviews strategy

Fintech reviews are heavily polarized — 5-stars and 1-stars, few in the middle. Common 1-star themes:

  • "Asked for SSN/ID and I'm not comfortable" (onboarding friction)
  • "App said my account is locked" (KYC/fraud detection)
  • "Withdrawal taking forever" (banking partner SLA)
  • "Got charged a fee I didn't expect"

Most of these aren't bugs — they're trust failures or product clarity issues. Respond:

  • Acknowledge the concern.
  • Explain why (compliance, regulation, banking partner).
  • Give a path (support email).

Reviewers responding tactfully here will often update their 1-star to 4-5 stars. This is the highest-leverage review response in any category.

For sentiment tracking, use the Review Analyzer to bucket negative reviews by theme — KYC issues, banking SLA, fee complaints, etc. Different teams own different fixes.

Fintech has unique ad-network rules:

  • Apple Search Ads: relatively friendly. Use it heavily.
  • Google App Campaigns: works, but tighter creative review.
  • Meta: finance ads require special category certification (run via your Meta Business Manager, takes weeks).
  • TikTok: similar — financial advertiser approval needed.

This means lead time matters. If you're planning a launch, start the Meta/TikTok approval 30 days before launch.

Localization

Fintech localizes harder than utility apps because:

  • Regulatory environment differs by country. A "FDIC insured" claim is meaningless outside the US.
  • Currency and payment rails differ. Show local currency, local bank logos.
  • Trust signals differ. Japanese users trust different signals than American users.

If you're targeting non-US markets, build localized listings with local compliance signals — don't translate US trust copy.

Run a fintech audit

Listing flaws in fintech kill ROAS faster than in any other category. Run a free ASO audit before any new release or paid push — it'll score trust signals, keyword density, screenshot hierarchy, and review velocity.

Common mistakes

  • Hedge nothing. "Guaranteed returns" gets rejected. Hedge everything.
  • No compliance signals. Even if you have them, you didn't put them on the listing.
  • Bank names in title. Rejection magnet.
  • Generic screenshots. Standard SaaS-style "feature 1, feature 2" screenshots underperform trust-first layouts.
  • Ignoring 1-star reviews. Each one is recoverable in fintech if you respond well.
  • No fee disclosure. Hidden fees → 1-star spirals.
